The 60s and 70s were sometimes called the "decade of discontent" because of the demonstrations against the war and the race riots in Detroit, Los Angeles, and other cities. Then again they were called the decade of "peace, love, and harmony" because of the peace movement and the emergence of the "flower children." "Far out, man," was one of the truest phrases of the period. If you were a teenager, it was surely the decade of rock and roll... from Elvis to the Beatles... Congress actually acted as President Johnson signed major civil rights legislation and the laws enacting Medicare and the first round of the war on poverty. The war in Vietnam was the subject of many films, notably The Deer Hunter and Apocalypse Now. The China Syndrome was released almost on the day that news broke of the disaster at Three Mile Island nuclear reactor.
